The room fell into a hush as the final move was made. A quiet tap on the board, a calculated breath, and in that fleeting moment, 14-year-old Adriel Josh Halabaso of Ilocos Sur proved that brilliance is not measured by age, but by the courage to outthink, outlast, and outplay.
What began as a simple pastime has now unfolded into a rising legacy for the Ilocos Sur chess prodigy, who carved his name into the Region I Athletic Association (RIAA) Meet 2026 as a bronze medalist in the Secondary Boys Chess Standard and more importantly, as a Palarong Pambansa qualifier.
Against a field dominated by older and more seasoned opponents, Halabaso played with composure beyond his years. Each move was a story of discipline and each victory was a proof to quiet resilience. Though the gold eluded him this time, the bronze he earned gleamed just as brightly, symbolizing grit forged under pressure.
“I can say that this year’s RIAA Meet was more challenging than ever,” Halabaso shared. “Most of my opponents were older and very experienced. But I enjoyed every match, and I’m thankful for the opportunity to qualify for Palaro.”
Behind every move he makes is the steady presence of his mother and coach, Mrs. Alicia Halabaso - the mind that helped shape his strategy and the heart that fueled his determination.
“Her guidance, patience, and belief in me are the reasons I’ve grown so much,” he said, his voice carrying both pride and gratitude.
Beyond the tournament halls, Halabaso’s brilliance stretches far beyond the 64 squares. He carried the Teodorian pride onto the global stage, competing with international mathematicians at the Thailand International Mathematical Olympiad, where he proudly bagged awards and proved that his intellect knows no borders.
Closer to home, he also showcased his sharp command of words in the Regional Schools Press Conference, excelling in journalism as much as he does in strategy. In the classroom, his excellence remains unmatched, earning him the distinction of With Highest Honors, a fitting tribute to a mind that thrives in every arena it enters.
From international mathematics competitions to regional press stages, Halabaso moves through every challenge with the same precision he brings to chess: focused, fearless, and always thinking three steps ahead.
Now, with his sights set on the Palarong Pambansa, the Ilocos Sur wunderkind prepares for his next battle. The board may grow tougher, the opponents stronger, but if there’s one thing Adriel Josh Halabaso has proven, it’s this:
He doesn’t just play the game.
He transforms it into a masterpiece.
