Beyond Earth Hour and R1AA
SDOIS vows for environmental protection, energy conservation
True to their green motif, SDO Ilocos Sur delegates paused their pursuit of gold to observe Earth Hour, signaling a pledge for environmental protection and energy conservation even beyond the Region 1 Athletic Association Meet (R1AA), April 7.
SDO Ilocos Sur officials emphasized that the Earth Hour is not merely a one-time gesture but must be integrated into their daily routines throughout the duration of the R1AA and beyond.
“True excellence is measured not just by the medals we hang around our necks, but by the world we leave behind for the athletes of tomorrow. Our discipline on the field must mirror our discipline in conserving our natural resources,” Marvin Tacal, Education Program Specialist, stressed.
The event began with a synchronized show of solidarity as delegates switched off main breakers and non-essential lights.
This was followed by a formal pledge led by Arnel Sinampaga, where athletes vowed to take meaningful steps such as conserving energy, reducing waste, practicing responsible consumption, supporting sustainable and eco-friendly choices, and raising awareness about climate change and environmental protection.
As the lights went out, the Special Event Committee led an Earth Hour Prayer asking for guidance in protecting the nature for future generations of athletes.
To deepen the connection with the environment, Charley Barcelona guided the delegation through nature meditation as they shifted from the noise of the regional meet to the sound of the evening.
Adding depth and relevance to the event, a shadow gallery followed using remaining low-light sources to create shadow puppets of endangered animals and to discuss the conservation status of each creature.
The event ended with the challenge of Dr. Saniata Piano who urged the athletes to ensure that the symbolic gesture of the night must translate into daily actions.
“While the hour is over, our commitment to nature is year-round. We switch off the lights, but we switch on our love and care for the earth,” Piano said.
