Hearts in Prayer, Eyes on Victory: SDO Ilocos Sur Opens R1AA Journey
With hearts lifted in prayer and eyes set on victory, athletes of the Schools Division Office (SDO) of Ilocos Sur gathered today, for a Thanksgiving Mass at Santa Cruz Central School pavilion —seeking not only blessings, but also strength of spirit before stepping into the Region 1 Athletic Association (R1AA) Meet.
The solemn celebration was officiated by Father Cristeto Cortez, parish priest of the Immaculate Conception Parish in Sta. Cruz, Ilocos Sur. In his homily, he underscored the importance of faith before any competition, reminding athletes that beyond physical readiness, inner strength, discipline, and trust in God will sustain them through pressure and challenges.
More than a simple gathering, the mass served as spiritual preparation for the athletes—grounding them in humility, sharpening their focus, and uniting them in a shared purpose before the official start of the games. It provided a moment to pause, reflect, and seek guidance before entering what many consider a test not only of skill, but also of character.
The mass was attended by top management officials of SDO Ilocos Sur, along with athletes, coaches, officiating officials, and support personnel, showing unity and collective support for the delegation.
The Region 1 Athletic Association Meet will be held in Candon City from April 6 to 11, 2026, with around 14,000 athletes from across Region 1 expected to participate.
As the competition begins, Ilocos Sur athletes carry with them not only months of training, but also the spiritual strength and clarity gained from the Thanksgiving Mass. As they step into the arena, they do so not only as competitors ready for battle, but as individuals guided by faith—prepared to face both victory and defeat with grace, resilience, and honor.
