FROM LANE TO LEGACY
How Makayla Fetalvero turned laps into gold and records at RIAA 2026
The whistle pierced the air. For a split second, the world stilled. Then, with a clean dive and a surge of power, Makayla Bettina Fetalvero broke the surface, turning a quiet swimming pool into a theater of speed, strength, and sheer will.
By the time the ripples settled, her name had been called again and again, seven times for gold, four times for new records, and the Most Outstanding Swimmer in the Secondary Girls division of the Region I Athletic Association (RIAA) Meet 2026.
BUILT BY REPETITION
In a sport measured by hundredths of a second, victory is never accidental. It is earned in early mornings, in silent laps, and in the discipline of doing the same stroke over and over again until it becomes instinct.
“Every race starts long before you dive in,” Fetalvero shared. “Physically, I trained almost every day, building my endurance and refining my technique. Mentally, I stayed focused, I visualized every turn, every stroke, and reminded myself that I was ready.”
That preparation carried her through a golden sweep in the 400m freestyle, 800m freestyle, 50m butterfly, 1500m freestyle, 400m individual medley, 4x100m medley relay, and 4x200m medley relay.
THE HANDS THAT LIFTED HER
Behind every powerful stroke was a network of support.
“Behind every medal are the people who believed in me,” she said. “My coach, my family, and my school Great Heights Learning Center pushed me to become stronger not just as an athlete, but as a person.”
Under the guidance of coach Ronalene G. Reolalas, Fetalvero learned to anchor her strength in discipline and purpose.
“My coach reminds me that swimming is not just about winning,” she added. “It’s about giving your best in every race.”
Beyond the pool deck, her family stood as her constant source of motivation. “Whenever I feel tired or pressured, I think of their sacrifices. That gives me the strength to keep going.”
LESSONS IN EVERY LAP
For Fetalvero, the pool is where character is formed.
“Swimming taught me perseverance,” she reflected. “There will always be moments when you feel like giving up, but if you stay disciplined and believe in yourself, you’ll get through it.”
Each lap, turn, and finish became part of a larger lesson, one that extends far beyond medals and podiums.
TOWARD A GREATER STAGE
Her performance not only earned applause but also secured the Quality Time Standard for the Palarong Pambansa, marking her as one of Region I’s brightest hopes on the national stage.
To young athletes who dream of following in her wake, Fetalvero offered a message drawn from her own journey:
“Train hard, stay humble, and trust the process. Every effort you give today will bring you closer to your goals.”
In the stillness after the final splash, the water held her story, not just of victories, but of a rising force named Makayla Bettina Fetalvero, carried forward by a current of gold toward something greater.
